Marketing and Communications Director, North America


Location: New York City

THE POSITION

The Marketing and Communications Director will lead in the development and delivery of strategy to build brand and drive broader awareness and donor support for WSPA in North America.

The success of WSPA’s global campaigns depends on the extent to which we can win the hearts and minds of the public and mobilize them to support us. This newly created role has responsibility for optimizing fundraising and communications opportunities through the coordination of activities and plans implemented in both our Canadian and USA offices.

Reporting to the Regional Director for North America this position will serve as an integral member of the regional senior management team working closely with the Executive Directors of the Canadian and USA offices and the Communications and Fundraising Directors of our International office.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working in collaboration with communications and development staff in the Canadian and USA offices, leads in the development and delivery of a broad range of integrated public relations, media and fundraising activities to advance WSPA’s strategic direction and positioning
  • Effectively and proactively positions WSPA as the global leader in animal welfare and raises awareness of the importance and relevance of animal welfare and its place among the key global issues facing the world today
  • Puts innovative initiatives in place to build WSPA’s visibility, brand awareness, impact, and financial resources
  • Develops key external alliances by cultivating media, corporate and philanthropic support
  • Seeks out celebrity spokespersons and maintains relationships with them
  • Develops corporate partnerships to increase WSPA’s visibility and market reach
  • Identifies challenges and emerging issues faced by WSPA and works with the leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and defines and executes appropriate strategies to support them
  • Maintains an overview of market and competitive knowledge and trend intelligence
  • Acts as media spokesperson as and when required
  • Promotes a culture of high performance and continuous improvement
  • Builds a team approach and encourages collaboration and cross learning


QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • University Degree
  • 8 to 10 years professional experience in fundraising and/or communications with demonstrated results in developing and executing diverse fundraising and communications strategies
  • Skilled in managing and developing staff
  • Reputation and crisis management experience
  • Proven media experience
  • Strong knowledge of direct marketing
  • Able to lead, inspire and motivate people
  • Knowledge of analytical tools and concepts; experience of using these tools to inform a marketing campaign and analyze complex information
  • Able to build and maintain collaborative relationships
  • Excellent communication skills – written, oral and presentation
  • Experience working in an international non-profit organization is an asset
