THE POSITION
The Regional Programs Director provides leadership and oversees the coordination and administration of WSPA’s animal welfare program delivery in Canada and the U.S. Responsibilities for this new role include strategic planning, staff coordination, reporting and evaluation of program and campaign activities, as well as playing an active role in the delivery of the program strategy by meeting with key policy makers and representing WSPA at conferences and other forums. Reporting to the Regional Director for North America this position will serve as an integral member of the regional senior management team working closely with the Executive Directors of the Canadian and U.S. offices and Campaigns Managers in our International office.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead the development of an effective North American program strategy which works to advance WSPA’s global strategic objectives and deliver positive outcomes for animals
• Coordinate the development of program budgets and operating plans which are integrated with global plans
• Ensures that program activities operate within the policies and procedures of the organization and comply with all relevant legislation and professional standards
• Ensure campaigning activities are integrated and that overlapping stakeholders are approached and managed properly
• Support country and regional level staff in delivery and implementation of program activities
• Lead/join negotiations and presentations to high level contacts in government, international institutions, other INGOs and NGOs, businesses and the media
• Represent WSPA and promotes animal welfare by speaking at conferences and forums
• Supervise program staff, providing direction, input and feedback
• Monitor program activities on a regular basis and conducts an annual evaluation to assess the strengths of the programs and to identify areas for improvement
• Ensure that programs operate within the approved budget
• Identifies and evaluates the risks associated with program activities and takes appropriate action to control them
• Write reports on program activities and achievements for management
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
• Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s degree in Public Policy/Advocacy strongly preferred
• “8-10 years’ experience with program management, public affairs and/or government relations in the non-profit or public advocacy arena.
• Hands-on supervisory experience with a team of 10 or more staff
• Demonstrated experience in project development and implantation and risk management
• Excellent knowledge of strategic planning and budgeting
• Able to build and maintain collaborative relationships within the non-profit, legislative and public advocacy communities
• Excellent communication skills – written, oral and presentation with the ability to articulate the mission and vision of an organization
• Proven ability to negotiate and lobby at a senior level
• Experience working in an international non-profit and/or an animal welfare organization is a strong plus
