Egyptian authorities are undertaking an unacceptably cruel assault on the pig population in Cairo. WSPA’s Director General has written a strong letter to the Prime Minister of Egypt, calling for an end to the mass cull.
Peter Davies, Director General, comments: “WSPA has received shocking first hand accounts from our member societies in Egypt of the cruel and inhumane treatment of pigs there. Our supporters will be shocked by the graphic footage of this brutal operation now available on the internet.”
Pigs being hit with iron bars, scooped up into bulldozers and flung into pits to be burned alive with chemicals; these are the truly distressing visuals that appeared as the Egyptian media started to report on the cruel methods being used in the cull.

The footage is available on You Tube; it is distressing and viewer discretion is strongly advised.
Initial reports suggested that the pig cull in Egypt was intended as a precaution against the spread of the ‘swine flu’ infection from pigs to humans.
It has now been revealed that the government had decided to remove these pigs from densely populated areas as long as a year ago, but seem to have been spurred into the current cruel course of action as news about swine flu started to spread.
The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has explicitly stated that culling is an inappropriate reaction to the outbreak of swine flu, as there is no known link between the flu and pigs.
A statement on the OIE website advises member countries ‘that the culling of pigs will not help to guard against public or animal health risks.’
“We strongly urge Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif to stop the inhumane cull of pigs. We want the prime minister to bring Egyptian animal welfare legislation in line with the OIE guidelines on transport and slaughter that they agreed in 2005,” says Davies.
Islamic religious leaders in Cairo have condemned the slaughter. The Head of the Fatwas Committee at the University of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Salim Mohammed Salim, has said that killing an animal that way is "strictly forbidden by Islam ... whatever it is, including a pig."
Please take action and protest against this horrific slaughter. Help us urge the Egyptian Prime Minister to end the cruelty now >>
