Helping Thailand's Horses

Lampang is a town situated in the north of Thailand, approximately 600 kilometres from Bangkok, and has a population of around 400 carriage horses which are a unique breed found only in that region.

The horses were suffering from a mineral deficiency which was resulting in head swelling, lameness and malnutrition. This, coupled with a lack of veterinary services and interbreeding, was putting the horses in danger of being wiped out completely.

Project mission

Since January 2004, WSPA and its member society the Lampang Pony Welfare Organization (LPWO) have set out to educate owners about the need to change the diet of their horses.

Tests proved that calcium was the lacking mineral and a local manufacturer was found that allowed bulk buying cheaply.

Targeting the foals was thought to be the best chance of success to ensure they had the right start and correct diet. But since work started, the improvement of health in the adult animals following treatment has been far above expectations.

Mobile clinics

It is hoped that by the end of the year the project will have reached all Lampang horse owners. Future plans include the addition of a mobile clinic to reach rural towns and villages as well as tourist areas.
