He's Never Known Kindness

READ RECENT NEWS ABOUT OUR CAMPAIGNS FOR BEARS

Thousands of bears are being kept in torturous conditions so that bile can be extracted from their gallbladders to be used in various tonics, shampoos and aphrodisiacs. Bear farming in Asia is on the rise.

China – Number of Bears Rises: Our most recent information suggests that while China boasts of reducing the number of bear farms, they are actually just consolidating farms and increasing the numbers of bears kept in captivity.

Vietnam –Thousands of Bears: During a dog-eating investigation in Vietnam, WSPA uncovered evidence that up to 5,000 bears are kept for their bile, with some farms keeping up to 70 bears. New bears are being smuggled in mainly from Laos
and some businesses are captive breeding.

Thailand – Black Market Trade: Recent research revealed that bear gall bladder is being shipped into Thailand at the Cambodia border, and then filters into Bangkok.

Singapore – Bear Bile Demand: And in Singapore, we found that 80% of Traditional Chinese Medicine shops sell bear gall bladder products.

I'm sure you agree, we can't allow this torture of bears to continue. That's why I hope you'll join WSPA in fighting to stop this cruelty with a generous holiday gift today. Your gift of $25, $50, $100 or more will play a valuable role in ending the needless suffering of tortured bears and other abused animals.

Let's work together to stop the abuse of bears and other animals who really need us.

Donate now to worthy efforts like this one, around the world.

WSPA's Action Plan

1. Education: Through an extensive network of affiliated humane societies in Asia, WSPA is undertaking education programs to discourage consumption of bear bile and to alert users to the cruelty in this industry.

2. Public Pressure: In America, Europe and Australia, broader education campaigns have been designed to build massive protest campaigns aimed at encouraging China to phase out the bear bile industry.

3. Law Enforcement: WSPA is working through the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to discourage the legalization of the international trade in bear bile. In addition, we work with our vast network of member societies to introduce and enforce laws against cruelty to bears.

4. Alternatives to Cruelty: WSPA is facilitating programs to increase demand for humane alternatives including a synthetic product which replicates the active ingredient in bear bile. Our aim is to shift the market majority to humane "artificial bear bile" products.

5. Uncovering the Truth: WSPA and its member societies have recently investigated the bear trade in Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Australia, Canada and the US and found significant underground trade in bear parts. The evidence uncovered in these investigations is a powerful weapon in the battle against legalizing the international trade in bear bile.

Testimonials

"The funding that WSPA provides keeps IBBR (Idaho Black Bear Rehibilitation) going, but it’s far more than that. Working in animal protection and rehabilitation is hard, but I always know WSPA will be there for encouragement and support in so many other ways. I never feel like I am in this alone."
