Responsible Pet Ownership

In some countries a large population of companion animals are kept as owned animals. While the keepers may care about their animals, many suffer inadequate care, neglect or even abandonment.

WSPA aims to improve the welfare of owned animals through education. WSPA also works towards the provision of affordable veterinary services by member societies and governments.

Why are the animals not receiving proper care?

The issues mentioned above are all too often due to ignorance on the owner's part. The lack of access to essential resources, including veterinary care, is also a major factor in the problems these animals face.

Your donations help to fund the following projects:

  • Public service announcements for television that educate people about the importance of responsible pet ownership, including vital information on rabies vaccinations.
  • Leaflets that give simple advice on how to care for cats and dogs have been produced in over ten languages and distributed by member societies and clinics.
  • Training for animal control officers in humane catching and handling, understanding dog behaviour and public education in responsible pet ownership.
  • Low-cost sterilisation of dogs and cats through mobile and static veterinary clinics in Latin American countries including Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica and Venezuela.

Testimonials

"The involvement of an organization such as WSPA provides help and guidance to deal with the issue of animal populations in need that arises in the aftermath of disaster. This makes the management of the whole relief operation easier, as in many cases animal issues are the cornerstone for the success of efforts."
