Communications Officer

Communications Officer

The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA)  seeks a full-time Communications Officer in its Boston, Massachusetts office to assist with the development and implementation of its overall communications activity in the United States, including media and public relations. The position is line managed by the WSPA-USA Executive Director and functionally reports to the Head of Media & PR at WSPA Headquarters in London. Responsible for liaising closely with relevant WSPA-USA Program/Campaign, Member Society, and Marketing staff.

WSPA is the world’s largest alliance of animal welfare organizations. It is headquartered in London and has 16 offices worldwide. Its vision is of a world where animal welfare matters and animal cruelty ends. WSPA is the only animal welfare organization to have consultative status at both the United Nations and the Council of Europe. A majority of WSPA’s work is conducted in developing countries where animal welfare principles are not well defined or non-existent.


Responsibilities

• Develop, coordinate and execute annual communications strategy for U.S.-based media campaigns
• Draft and distribute press releases, media advisories, talking points and correspondence surrounding public announcements on WSPA’s international and U.S. programs
• Write and edit articles & reports on WSPA USA’s projects and campaigns for publicity, appeals, and publications
• Oversee WSPA’s outreach on social media channels, e.g., Twitter, Facebook, blogs, etc.
• Assist with the development and production of program & marketing materials
• Develop and maintain media contact database
• Respond to media inquiries and potential opportunities provided by media lead services, and schedule interviews
• Monitor press coverage and maintain file of clippings; regularly summarize and analyze media monitoring statistics
• Work with web manager to maintain and expand the current news/media center on website

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required
• Must have at least 2 years’ work experience in media relations/communications field
• Animal welfare and international NGO experience preferred but not required.  Commitment to animal welfare work is desired
• Must have excellent communication skills, written and verbal
• Must have knowledge of AP Style
• Able to work with minimal supervision and comfortable as part of both a national multi-disciplinary team and a global media/PR team as part of both a national multi-disciplinary team and a global media/PR team
