Drought first affected Los Chiles County, Costa Rica, in December 2007. By the following May, animals were dying. Local livelihoods were dying with them: 2,600 families were affected.

With thousands of animals threatened by disease and hunger, the National Emergency Management Commission and National Animal Health Service (SENASA) contacted WSPA's team in Costa Rica from emergency assistance.
