This week the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supplies made a leap forward for animal wellbeing by stating official support for the development of a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW).

The UDAW is a proposed set of principles which, if endorsed by the United Nations, will result in international recognition that animal welfare matters for animals, people, and the environment.

In a letter backing the UDAW initiative, the Ministry stated their support for “human and animal welfare, in respect of national and international legislations.”

A foundation for further action

Earlier this year, WSPA Brazil presented over 7,000 signatures to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supplies from members of the public who want to see the country recognize the importance of animal welfare.

With both public and ministerial support, WSPA Brazil has a strong case to seek full government backing for the Declaration.

As a nation, Brazil could join Cambodia, Sweden, New Zealand, Fiji, and the Seychelles - as well as more than a million of individuals worldwide - in publicly advocating for the UDAW and a world where animal welfare matters.
