Reporting Animal Cruelty

Seeing animals mistreated for the entertainment of tourists or witnessing animal cruelty on a large scale can leave travelers feeling distressed and helpless. When armed with knowledge and conviction, tourists can be powerful agents of change for the countless animals that suffer worldwide. Below are some guidelines for what to do if you encounter animal cruelty or abuse while traveling.
When you witness abuse:
- Record the time, date and location of the incident
- Note how many and what type of animals were involved
- If possible, take photos or video as evidence
Protest to:
- Those inflicting the cruelty and politely request them to stop the abuse
- Your travel agent, tour operator and hotel manager
- Local tourism office
- The country's ambassador, consular or diplomatic representative in your country of residence. Find contact information >>

Report marine mammal harassment:
- Marine mammal harassment is punishable by law. National and state laws prohibit pursuing, feeding or attempting to feed marine mammals and violations could result in fines as high as $20,000 and imprisonment for one year
