Michigan Humane Society Launches 'Certified Pre-Owned Cats' Program

July 2009

Last month, the Michigan Humane Society (MHS) launched its “Certified Pre-Owned Cats” program as part of a strategic campaign to proactively address cat overpopulation and homelessness in southeast Michigan.  While there are many benefits to adopting an adult cat, the fact remains that there are more adoptable cats than available loving homes, and kittens are in much greater demand than adult cats. To help ensure that every adoptable cat finds a loving home, MHS is waiving the adoption fee for cats ages four months and older. Through the program, MHS hopes to “drive” more traffic to its three adoption centers. After all, MHS certified pre-owned cats are better than new!

The no-cost cat adoption program was launched to correspond with the difficult summer months when animal welfare organizations are overwhelmed with the sheer number of homeless cats and kittens brought to their doors.  In 2008, from May through August, MHS sheltered and cared for more than 6,900 homeless felines, and a similar influx is expected this year.

“The Certified Pre-Owned Cats' program was designed to utilize humor in bringing awareness to an otherwise serious issue by capitalizing on the famous used car concept of ‘better than new,” said Michael Robbins, MHS director of marketing and communications. “You find this really is true when you look at all that MHS invests in each animal, from veterinary care and treatment inclusive of vaccinations and sterilization surgery to in-shelter training, and our comprehensive adopter support program.”

“Certified Pre-Owned Cats” is the latest in a series of programs initiated by MHS to alleviate cat overpopulation and homelessness. Others include:

Low-cost feline spay/neuter programs that allows pet guardians with limited financial resources the opportunity to have their cat or kitten sterilized for as low as $25.
Pawsitive Start, an innovative in-shelter training program that works to improve the mental and physical well-being of MHS dogs and cats – making them happier, healthier and more adoptable.
Adopter Support, a service that provides key post-adoption assistance.
• MHS has partnered with PetSmart in a feline off-site adoption program that features MHS adoptable cats within the retailer’s Rochester Hills, Roseville and Taylor stores.
• MHS’ free Behavior Help Line provides advice and recommendations to address undesirable pet behaviors.
“In-Home Heroes,” MHS’ short-term, in-home foster care program, saves lives by helping animals who need extra time and care prior to adoption.
• Beginning June 8, all cats and kittens adopted from MHS will go to their new homes with a microchip, further increasing the great value of MHS’ comprehensive adoption package.

“The Michigan Humane Society is proud to have implemented one of the most comprehensive cat care and adoption programs in the country, to address all key components of the cat overpopulation solution: adoption, awareness and sterilization,” said Cal Morgan, MHS president and CEO.
