Sample Letters

Here is a sample letter to the editor for you to use as a guide:

The Letter to Editor is one of the most powerful tools for grassroots activists to get their message out to public and refute inaccurate information previously printed in the paper or covered in the news.

Follow the guidelines of the paper you wish to submit your letter to. Some general pointers - Keep your letter short and on one subject, never exceed one page, know your facts, make reference to current news items relating to your topic, and include contact details. If your first letter doesn't get published, send a second and third. In other words, keep trying!

Dear Editor:

I was disappointed to read in the (date) edition of (name of newspaper) that (your issue) has so much support in (your town/state). I would like to take this opportunity to clear up some misinformation/present an alternative point of view to this issue.

(1-2 paragraphs about current situation/history of issue and your argument)

I urge you to consider (your issue). Please help protect animals by supporting only those activities that do not harm animals.

Sincerely,

(your name)

Here is a sample letter to a town council member/legislator for you to use as a guide:

Well-written letters and timely phone calls to elected officials and legislators can have a significant impact on the lives of animals. Letters and calls need not be lengthy or original, just clear and concise. Be sure to request a response to your letter with an explanation as to how your representative plans to address your concerns.

Dear Council Member/Senator/Representative:

I am writing to you on behalf of the concerned citizens of our town who are part of a growing trend in support of banning/initiating (your issue) in our town. Similar laws have already been passed in countless towns and cities across the U.S. and the list continues to grow (verify).

(Explain details of current situation and reasons for change. i.e., wild animals should not be used in rodeos because of the inherent cruelty they face during training and transport.)

I urge you to support an ordinance/efforts to (your goal) and to send the message that (your town) protects animals.

I will look forward to hearing about your plans concerning (your issue).

Sincerely,

(your name)

(Phone Number)

Here is a sample letter to a corporate sponsor for you to use as a guide:

Be sure to request a response to your letter explaining how this business plans to proceed.

Dear (corporate sponsor):

I understand that your business is sponsoring (event) on (date of appearance) in (location). I am opposed to the treatment of (animal/species) at (event) because of the (suffering, etc.) caused to the animals.

· (Outline your argument in 3-4 concise bullet points)

Across the country, ticket sales to such events are dropping as the general public grows increasingly aware of the abuse suffered by animals at (event).

Fortunately, there are many viable alternatives to (event). I urge you, for the sake of the animals; to cancel (name of event)'s upcoming performance and sponsor an animal-free event instead.

I will look forward to hearing how you plan to proceed in regards to this issue.

Sincerely,

(your name)

Testimonials

"I have left a bequest to WSPA because it’s a well-respected and financially secure group, which can be counted on to work well into the future. There are many organizations that help animals in our country. WSPA is special. They step in worldwide to help those who suffer from neglect and abuse, natural disasters, war, overpopulation, factory farming and ethnic customs. It’s comforting to know that there are people who are willing to put themselves at risk to help all kinds of creatures."
