Ten Years of Libearty

To this day, Libearty is still the only worldwide campaign for bears and its influence can be seen in many countries. The campaign has touched the lives of so many bears and is shaping lasting changes in bear welfare worldwide. With your continued support, we can accomplish even more in the next ten years.

Your donations will help us to do many things including:

  • Build new bear sanctuaries
  • Battle against the brutal bear farms in Asia
  • Further our efforts to prevent more bears from being placed in the cruel Japanese bear parks and to dramatically improve living conditions for bears currently housed there
  • To maintain a ban on the international trade in bear parts
  • Push for a national Bear Protection Act here in the States
  • Continue to provide safe haven for orphaned bear cubs

1995 - WSPA field officers rescue 14 dancing bears in the middle of the night from a gypsy camp near Istanbul, Turkey. The bears were among the first residents of WSPA's beautiful new forest sanctuary complete with dens and small ponds for swimming.

1997 - WSPA and Member Socity ALIVE report on their joint investigation of nine Japanese bear parks. We exposed the inherent and the hidden cruelty of these tourist attractions, and today we are continuing our campaign to close down the parks.

1999 - The Idaho Black Bear Rehabilitation center is saved from shutting it's doors forever thanks to funding from WSPA. To date, 74 orphaned bear cubs have been returned to the wild.

2001 - WSPA secures its very first confiscation of an abused bear in Pakistan. Donations from our supporters enabled us to stop hundreds of bear-dog fights, prosecute criminals, educate Pakistani communities and build a sanctuary for the bears.

2002 - WSPA builds the first sanctuary for dancing bears in India, allowing the government to confiscate and rescue bears. This spells the beginning of the end of bear dancing in India.

Testimonials

"I like what WSPA does internationally. The way the world is now, animals of all kinds --- wildlife, farm animals, companion animals and working animals --- need all the help we can give them. People can make choices but animals are the innocent victims. I’m just glad that I’m able to provide the resources to help give some animals a better life."
