WSPA has condemned Denmark's moves for a resumption of commercial whaling. This comes as governments gather to decide the future of the world's whales at the 2005 meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in Ulsan, Korea, next week.
The Danish Foreign Minister was recently quoted in the Danish press as admitting that Denmark would work for the lifting of the moratorium on commercial whaling. This stance is tied up with the development of a controversial “Revised Management Scheme (RMS)“ that could lead to the legalisation of the suffering of thousands of whales.
However, Denmark's official position is not shared by the Danish public, with a recent opinion poll having shown that the majority oppose or strongly oppose whaling, with just 5% in support of it.
WSPA is part of the Whalewatch coalition, comprising of over 140 non-governmental organisations from 55 countries. Whalewatch is opposed to an RMS package that will lead to the lifting of the moratorium or the resumption of commercial whaling.
