Plan your next meal out with WSPA’s new Restaurant Database

Nov 19, 2009

The holiday season is upon us, and with it typically comes an upswing in the number of people dining out with family and friends.  This year, the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is encouraging holiday diners to seek out their next meal using our new database dedicated to identifying restaurants that serve humanely raised meat and dairy products.

Making compassionate choices about what you eat starts at home, but it should extend to all of your dining experiences - including eating out at restaurants.  And there is no better time to remember this than during the holiday season, when people frequently go out to restaurants to celebrate with co-workers, family, and friends.

Fortunately, WSPA’s new Restaurant Database is here to help you identify restaurants that serve products from humanely raised animals - a choice that benefits animal welfare, human health and the environment.

The database, the first-ever of its kind, includes over 150 restaurants in 15 popular U.S. cities and offers a wide range of different cuisines. To build the unique list, WSPA experts scoured menus to identify meat, dairy and egg products that indicate a higher level of animal welfare than products sourced from factory farms and then spoke directly with the restaurant chefs to verify the accuracy of the information.

Growing Trend Toward Humane

The inclusion of humane terms on such a wide range of menus is an encouraging sign and indicates a growing awareness of the many benefits of eating humane.

“We applaud these restaurants for their growing commitment to animal welfare and their dedication to educating diners on the benefits of eating humanely raised meat and dairy,” says WSPA Program Officer Sharanya Prasad.  “These products not only indicate higher animal welfare, but also are generally healthier and more environmentally friendly than factory farmed alternatives.”
